Paypal Verifide The Hall is reportedly haunted by a woman in gray, a man has been seen watching over weddings in the great hall and children’s voices have been heard on the staircase. There has been a sitting of a man dressed in a 1940s style attire in the garden along with a phantom lady who sits in one of the rooms In the video above there is an EVP heard at 3:26 a voice our sounds like something says Kitties! There is also a fine collection of oil paintings, delftware and heavily carved oak furniture, giving an authentic impression of gentry life following the turbulence of the English Civil War. The tranquil Jacobean garden leads to the Nuttery, a wildflower nut orchard but built next to a grav yard that is said to also be haunted. Background: In 1183, almost 800 years ago in the village of Wessyngton, England, the Washington family took its name. In 1789 General George Washington a descendant of that family and leader of the Revolution, became the first President of a new nation - the United States of America. Five generations of George Washington's direct ancestors lived in the hall before the family moved south and then emigrated in 1657 to Northern Neck in the New colony of Virginia. Origin of the haunting: Dates back to the Saxon times, war, general life, plague, its next door to a grave yard and the vilage is said to be haunted by highway men. The Hall is reputedly haunted by the ghost of a grey lady who walks the corridors of the upper floor, variously described as wearing a long flowing grey dress, and in some stories she is seen weeping. When the Hall was used as a tennement the apparition was mostly seen by the children, one tale from this period relates how a child asked its mother who the lady was who was weeping in the room, the child had of course seen the grey lady.
Washington Old Hall is a delightful stone-built 17th-century manor house, which incorporates parts of the original medieval home of George Washington's direct ancestors. It is from here that the family took their surname of 'Washington'. There are displays on George Washington, and the recent history of the Hall.
The capital of the new nation was named Washington in his honour. The Wessyngton, which had various spellings until it evolved into Washington, comes from the Anglo Saxon - 'Hwaes' a Saxon Chief, 'Inga' meaning family of, and 'Tun' an estate - the estate of Hwae's (Wassa's) family.
The first ancestor of George Washington to live at Washington was William de Hertburn, who moved to the village in 1183. Before surnames were in general use, nobles and landowners assumed the name of the property they owned. Thus, William de Hertburn became William de Wessyngton. Had he not moved in 1183, America's first President and its capital might have been named Hertburn, (pronounced Heartburn in England).
It is not known whether William de Hertburn built the original Washington Old Hall or whether it already existed. The present Hall is a typical example of a small English manor house of the early seventeenth century. Built of local sandstone, it stands on the old twelfth century foundations. The arches between the Kitchen and the Great Hall are from the original house. Full Investigation undertaken and rated: Amazing with good EVP

On a visit to the hall in 2008 details of recent paranormal occurrances were related by the curatorial staff, Edith Dawson, Kate Gardner, and Anne Hurst who all asserted that there had been the strong smell of lavender perfume in 1997 and 1998, emanating from the areas of the stairs and in the entrance hallway. Another incident concerned a young woman with children who having taken the children out of the hall soon returned to say thet there was a definite presence there, especially in the great Hall. She asserted that the hall had the feel of a church, although she was unawar
e that the building is used as a wedding venue, and that the spirit seeme to like watching the ceremonies in the hall. Kate Gardner also related the tale of when she was talking to one of the caterers in the upstairs room, the caterer was looking past her at a figure in the room. There was of course nobody there.
Alone in the dark entertainment went along for pre investigation in 2009 and noted some strange goings on, the sound of what we could only put down to a baby crying, a creaking of an old chare as if someone was sitting in it and moving, the strange smell of lavender witnessed in the kitchen and grate hall.
EMF that randomly moved around the location by itself and temperatures that where a steady 17c then dropped in only one part of the room to 14c and remained there for over one minute. Whilst taking photographs we noticed that the babies cradle was rocking slightly but it was behind the ropes and no one was near it!
Whilst in the attic we noticed what sounded like jumping and the sound of something moving, upon inspection there was nothing there. An ice cold chill followed us around the attic floor where one member will get the chance to partake in a lone vigil in the same place 2 spirit girls are said to haunt and like to play tricks on people. Now some one will be in there play house if they dare...

This event is exclusive to Alone in the dark entertainment and no other investigation team will be at Washington Old Hall, so book now and be part of Washington’s history as all the tales and ghost sightings will be created and turned in to a new book on Washington’s old ghosts...
