The Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre is located in the village of Nenthead on Alston Moor in the North Pennines, Cumbria. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and also as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and boasts the title of the largest lead mining complex in Britain with public access, as well as Nenthead being the highest village in England! Nenthead Village was the first purpose-built industrial village in Britain, and the work at the Mines formed the basis and foundation of the social welfare system we know today. During the 18th century, Nenthead Mines was a major producer of lead and silver, and Nenthead was the first village in England to develop electric street lighting, made possible by the excess power generated in the mines.

The site has its origins in the 17th century, with records showing small companies and individuals mining for lead ore in the North Pennines and selling their produce to the Quaker controlled Ryton Company, near Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1692, the Governor and Company was formed in London, having been granted a charter for the smelting of lead with coal. The two companies merged in 1704 into the London Lead Company, nicknamed the Quaker Company due to the religious persuasion of many of the shareholders. In 1715, the Manor of Alston Moor was forfeited to the Crown after its owner James Radcliffe, 3rd Earl of Derwentwater, led a Northumbrian contingent in the Jacobite Rebellion and was executed for his part.

In 1735, King George II granted the estate to the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich in London, and most of the mining leases on Alston Moor were let to Colonel George Liddell in 1736. Colonel Liddell built the first smelting mill at Nenthead, and then in 1745 the London Lead Company obtained the Liddell leases and various others, becoming the major employer at Nenthead.

The London Lead Company operated the Nenthead Mines until 1882, when the leases were sold to the Nenthead and Tynedale Lead and Zinc Company. They increased silver production and continued smelting until the mill closed in 1896, when the Vielle Montagne Zinc Company took over. The Belgian company modernised the site and continued mining ore at Nenthead until 1920, when production began to decline to the point that the old spoil tips were reworked. The Mines closed finally in 1965 and the site turned to ruin until in 1997 it was bought by the North Pennines Heritage Trust whose initial project was to restore a number of Mine Buildings into use as workshops, a museum and offices.

Visit the trust during the day or visit there website at http://www.npht.com/

The Ghost's of the mines

Nenthead Mines and the buildings around it have some fascinating ghostly phenomenon known to haunt them.

SHADOW PEOPLE and BLACK FIGURES
Partial apparitions and shadowy figures have been witnessed throughout the buildings here, on a regular basis; frequently they are seen at the entrance to the mine. While pre-investigating the location with Tony Liddel from Other World North East we witnesed a set of legs walk around the corner in darknes so dence our torch light could not penertrate it, but the legs of a blue light were so bright we seen them. Are these the spirits of former mine workers long since gone?

UNEXPLAINED VOICES
Voices have been heard coming from areas within which there is nobody present. Knocking and other unexplained sounds are also heard. We caught this growl on EVP recorders while only 2 of us where standing in the mine. click the image to hear.

P
HANTOM FOOTSTEPS and STAMPING
The sounds of disembodied footsteps have been heard by staff and visitors to Nenthead Mines, coming from areas where there is nobody present. Along with heavy stamping feet are also witnesed.

MISTS
Unexplained mists have been seen to materialise in mid-air, then quickly vanish once again.

STRANGE LIGHTS
While we where there we noticed some strange activity with lighting flickering for no known resoin, a small purple light was also seen floating outdoors in bright sun light and it moved into a building and vanished. Staff and visitors have often reported seeing strange light anomalies - described as glowing 'ping-pong' balls - floating in and around the buildings.

THE MYSTERY CALLER
The mines have emergency telephone systems which enabled communication with the surface. These telephones are known to regularly ring, as if someone is trying to contact the surface from within the mines themselves...only there is nobody down them at the time. The line has been checked, and no faults could be found. We contacted BT to find out more and thay stated that what is happening is imposible and that the phone lines would be internal and have external conections!

UNEXPLAINED ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR
Certain buildings around Nenthead Mines have a rather strange effect on animals; they flatly refuse to enter them, getting agitated to the point of distress. While we were there our little dog Reef refused to gointo the buildings and started randomly barking at nothing next to the entry to the mines.

OTHER REPORTED ACTIVITY
Strange smells, Cold spots, Feelings of being watched, Things moving, Stone Throwing, Electrical issues and lots more..

Haunting type: Apparition, sounds, orbs, ectomist, stone tape theory moving objects, Electrical problems, violent attacks on members of staff.

Ye Old Miners Myth

In many old established mining areas throughout the world, there was along tradition of mine spirits, in Cornwall as up in the North where many a Cornish mining family found them self working for money in the old mines of England. In many mines these were known as the Knockers. They frequented the tin mines that formed much of local economy in 18th and 19th century Cornwall. Knockers was not the only name given to mine spirits others being Knackers, Buccas, and Spriggans to name a few. As well as the mines, the Knockers were thought to haunt some wells and other natural features, which along with the other names for them, suggests a wider use of the term to describe supernatural
creatures.

According to descriptions, the Knockers took the form of smal lthin-limbed entities with large hooked noses. They inhabited the deepest darkest parts of the mine, and could sometimes be heard
knocking and working their own lodes in the darkness. No doubt that any distant creak or rock fall would be amplified in the claustrophobic darkness of the mines. It is no wonder spirits were thought to inhabit these dangerous work places, where thoughts of the supernatural could cause an instant shiver down the spine.

The Knockers generally kept to their own company and were thought to
be benevolent, knocking at the richest of the lodes and showing
themselves only to those that they favoured.

But as with all fairies they needed to be treated with respect,
whistling could offend them, as could intentional spying on their
activity, and making the sign of the cross. To appease them they were
left small offerings of food or tallow, in the more remote parts of the
mines, failure to do this could cause repercussions such as bad luck.
Strange tricks were often played on those who offended them, and a
miner could find himself led to dangerous places in the mine.

There were a few musings as to the origin of the Knockers, some
thought they were the ghosts of Jews who were working the mines in
penance. Another theory suggests they were the spirits of souls who
could not gain access to heaven or hell, this is also used as an
explanation for wider manifestations of fairies. The fact that Knockers
were also thought to haunt other recesses and wells, suggests the name
became mixed in some quarters to describe several types of fairy.

Belief and sightings of Knockers has died with tin mining industry,
although they are still thought to reside in the dark un-worked tunnels
in some quarters, now free from human interaction.
