The Hung, a poem by S.J.Taylor

"For thy time has come for thee witch to be done, see thy innocent hung, thy cries of fear a drip of a tear,

Gallo ropes blow throw wind and moor, the sounds of gasping slow

Within thy end thee cry executed upon the Town Moor on the 21st 1649

Dumped down low in the weed and heather of St Andrew grow, bones be hexed cursed and vexed

As black shadow shift the night will drift in time long forgot, for whether he or she was a witch or not"

Background:The opprobrious epithet of witch-county which has tenaciously clung to Newcastle since 1649 is due to the fact that the witchcraft executions took place on the town moor and the trials took place on Newcastle's Quayside in the old town hall known today as Lloyds Quayside bar.

The source of the accused which resulted in the death for alleged witchcraft of 14 persons within 2 months in the City of Newcastle. At the time it was a cold harsh time as the English Civil War began In 1642 In 1645 Charles surrendered to the Scots and was imprisoned in Newcastle for nine months, According to royalists, Charles II became king when his father Charles I was executed at Whitehall on 30 January 1649, the climax of the English Civil War England was in a sad state of pity with the king Dead and the witch finders accusing any woman that looked old and hagged of been a witch.

March 26, 1649 - WITCH TRIALS
(Newcastle)
Twenty-seven out of 30 suspected witches are found guilty of witchcraft at Newcastle old town hall. Fourteen are executed on the Town Moor. One man is executed for being a wizard. Newcastle Council had suggested all witches be brought to trial, so magistrates sent for a Scottish witch finder's and Prickers

Witch finder John Kincaid & witch prickers Cuthbert Nicholson, Thomas Shovel are said to haunt the building still to this day.

The Newcastle bellman invited people to report suspected witches at Saint Marys church and the old Town Hall 1649.

Thirty women were brought to the Town Hall and stripped to their waist. Nicholson pushed a pin under their clothes to pierce their skin. If they did not bleed they were declared witches all her bloud contracted into one part of her body, and then he ran a Pin into her Thigh, and then suddenly let her Coats fall, and then demanded whether she had nothing of this in her body, but did not bleed, but she, being amazed, replied little, and then he put his hand up her coats and pulled out the pin and set her aside as a guilty person and child of the Devil. John Kincaid was later executed in Scotland for trickery. He confessed responsibility for the deaths of 220 women. He was paid 20 shillings for each witch captured.

"women, to their souls' eternal perdition if they yielded to
the desires of their bodies, like the fatal Banshie,
harbinger of death and ruin, were the popular forms
of the Scottish spirit-world ; and in none of them do
we find either love or gentleness, but only fierceness
and crime, enmity to man and rebellion to God. But
saddest and darkest and unholiest of all was the belief
in witchcraft, which infested society for centuries like a
sore eating through to the very heart of humanity, and
which was nowhere more bitter and destructive than

among the godly children of our Northern sister"

Origin of the haunting: Dates from 1400s - today, Fire, witchcraft, Civil war, murder, general life,  plague, Smugling, The Home to the Newcastle Witchcraft trials of 1649.

Ghost story: The building now a J.D Weatherspoon pub is said to be haunted by a man in old style clothing, he walks the upper floor pacing back and forth with his holy bible under his arm and has been described as an ice cold looking individual with dark eyes and white skin with glare that will send evil through your soul. His dress style is that of a puritan with large white collars and black clothing. With him comes a strange smell of pipe smoke and urine.

There has also been a ghostly figure of a woman in 17th century clothing sited on the back staircase wondering with a candle flickering in her hand. The glare from the candle supposedly seen like flickering flames and upon inspection the flickering vanished from site but it leaves behind the smell of pig fat candles just snuffed.

Phantom fires that no one can explain are started in the upper levels and strange sounds are heard from boarded up rooms. Empty voids left to rot in time where men’s voices echo from the past, the sounds of child playing and horses in the caught yard.

This pub is used on the Haunted Pub Tours of Newcastle and since the tours started reports of ghostly going’s on have spiralled, with phantom shadows and ghostly men that can only be described as what looks like a pirate. A priest has also been seen in the court yard of the building and vanished in to an unopened door. Bar stools will be moved by unseen customers and glasses that vanish, this location promises to be one of the best locations we have ever investigated.

For the first time in the pubs history, Ghost Hunter Team UK will be allowed exclusive access to this haunting but historical bountiful location. So join us if you dare and spend one night in number 35 The Close the home of the Newcastle Witches...

Haunting type: Apparition, sounds, orbs, ectomist, stone tape theory moving objects, Electrical problems, violent attacks on members of staff.
